The environmental movement has been impacted by a culture of racism and exclusion, which has led to the funding and centering of mostly white-led organizations. Join us in collective learning and action to dismantle the systems that have allowed this to happen and work towards environmental justice.

We invite community members and organizations here in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin to join in our mission to build a multicultural environmental community and movement by:

  • dismantling white supremacy
  • decentering whiteness
  • fighting racism
  • advocating for environmental justice

Join as a Community Member

Community members of all races and identities are welcome to join in building this multicultural community. We invite folks to commit to action in their personal and professional lives, as it is not enough to learn about white supremacy and racism. We must take action against it.

How it Works

On February 1st, we’ll begin our collective learning and action session to effectively dismantle white supremacy and racism in our community. Together, we’ll fight racism, work towards environmental justice, and build a multicultural environmental community.

1. Participate in Collective Learning

Community members who are interested in exploring issues of white supremacy are invited to work together through Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad. You’ll learn about how white supremacy shows up in your life personally so you can effectively dismantle it.

You’re also invited to gather as a community on the following dates to talk through anything that came up while working through the book:

  • February 1 (Orientation)
  • March 1
  • March 29
  • April 26
  • May 24

2. Participate in Collective Action

Every two weeks, all community members will receive a Collective Action Alert email with suggested actions to fight racism, work towards environmental justice, and build a multicultural environmental community. Collective Action Alerts allow us to act in unison and target our collective power to respond to the needs of the community.

Additionally, you are invited to join in monthly Community Action Planning. Together, we’ll discuss and plan actions we can take in our community. Community Action Planning will take place on the following dates:

  • February 3 (Meet Up)
  • March 3
  • March 31
  • April 28
  • May 26

How to Join

As a community member, there are four different ways you can participate. Read through the four options below and then decide which one works best for you. Fill out this form by February 1st to join in the 2022 Collective Learning and Action Session.

1. Work through Me and White Supremacy with an Unlearning Circle

We’ll organize you into a group of 5-8 people based on your availability. You commit to working through Me and White Supremacy and meeting virtually with your circle once a week using The Circle Way. All members help lead the circle and support one another in this collective learning and action.

2. Work through Me and White Supremacy with an Accountability Buddy

You commit to working through Me and White Supremacy on your own, and checking in regularly with one other person via email. You and your Accountability Buddy help support one another in this collective learning and action.

3. Work through Me and White Supremacy Independently

You commit to working through Me and White Supremacy on your own while taking collective action.

4. Collective Action Only

You commit to joining in collective action to dismantle white supremacy and racism. This option is for you if you know how racism and white supremacy are present in your life, or if you’ve already worked through Me and White Supremacy (or other resources). You will also be invited to attend the monthly Community Action Planning sessions.

Join as a Committed Partner

Organizations as a whole are invited to join in this work as a Committed Partner. Participation from Committed Partners is crucial for dismantling systems of oppression and racism that exist at the structural level of our organizations and in the environmental movement. When we change the systems and structures, we can transform the environmental movement.

How it Works

Since March 2021, Committed Partners have been coming together to address white supremacy, whiteness, and racism in our organizations and in the movement, and advocate for environmental justice in our community. Your organization is invited to join us as we collectively and collaboratively work towards the following:

1. Building an Action Network

Building an action network will allow us to act in unison on a large scale and in real-time to impact change on a local level. We’ll use the action network to deliver tools and resources to each Committed Partner to effectively engage their community into taking action.

2. Becoming Anti-Racist Multicultural Organizations

Using the Continuum on Becoming an Anti-Racist Multicultural Organization by Crossroads Ministry as a model, we’ll create a road map with you to help guide your organization into becoming anti-racist and multicultural. The road map will be based on the specific needs and circumstances of your organization.

How to Join

As an organization, you’ll join in this work with the Committed Partners listed below. After you fill out the form, we’ll be in touch to set up a time to chat more about this project, learn more about you and your organization, and answer any questions.

Questions or Comments?

Leave a comment below with any questions or comments you have. We’d be happy to chat with you.

Additional Project Info

This project began after attending August Ball‘s anti-racism workshop series in Fall 2020. Nearby Nature Milwaukee, Milwaukee Environmental Consortium, and Hummingbird collaborated to launch this project in March 2021. 13 organizations and over 90 community members joined in after its initial launch. You can read more about how it came together here and its launch here.

This project continues to be developed as a program of Milwaukee Environmental Consortium.
